Peter White has announced on the TMW forum (click here) (http://www.truckmodelworld.com/yaf_postst10557_For-TMW-Readers.aspx) that he has stepped down as the editor of TMW after 23 years at the helm.
-
That is a great shame, i would say that man has almost single handedly made this hobby what it is today!
I understand the need to step down, especially after 23 years , as i have just stepped down as an editor (all be it a smaller audience) after only 10 years!
I wish him good luck, health & happiness for the future, maybe now he can build what he wsnts, when he wants!
-
"Some changes planned for TMW" and Peter steps down. I may be being pessimistic but it sounds ominous to me......
-
2 + 2 = 4 more often than not Andrew
They will be big shoes to fill, assuming that`s the plan.
-
peter did a fantastic job for truck modelling and deserves his retirement  I had a conversation with the bloke from IGP at Accrington last weekend and he has mentioned he wants to take the magazine forward but it turns out that under traplet sales had dropped to around the 600 mark I think I remember sales being as high as 2500/3000 a few years ago I could be wrong.
he says that he intends to get TMW to more outlets and is researching which outlets sell high volumes of truck magazines and will start there. he will be aiming to get a bit more 1-50 and other scales in the magazine as well I know that's not everybodys cup of tea but we need a wider audience to keep the magazine alive the only downside is that there is a possibility the magazine will going to bi-monthly in the near future.

. I agree voyager.
-
I personally think that TMW will end up as a quarterly supplement in something like Truck & driver or Diecast Modeller?
I really hope it can carry on as it is, but Nobody will match what Peter has done over the past 20 odd years
-
Remember what it says on the top of the Magazine ???
"By truck modellers, for truck modellers" so, the regular contributers need to keep er contributing!!
Keep the artices going and the mag stays surely ??? Yes you need someone interested at the helm, but.......!
-
True Mick, but you also need modellers to purchase the magazine, something must be wrong, as Alan says subscribers/buyers have dropped from nearly 3000 to 600, that fact alone tells you why Traplet were willing to drop TMW from its portfolio

i reckon they have a valid point regarding the outlets. i personally don't like subscribing to any magazine but unless you subscribe to TMW you won't get a copy as the chances of finding a copy in any stores all most impossible. as for how the mag develops without Peter remains to be seen

the guy i spoke to seemed to be very keen to keep the magazine going but he did state that he wants it to cover all scales more evenly and not a majority of 1-24 as it is now. one idea would be to advertise in truck and driver as a lot of drivers are into models then maybes get tmw into truckstops etc. there are also a lot of very good models out there so why don't you give it a go at contributing believe you me if i can write an article anybody can

I haven't been a subscriber for many years, as used to pick it up in W.H.Smiths, or occasionally, back issues were available off a local market trader in my local town. But I haven't had a copy of TMW for a while now as W.H.Smiths stopped selling it. I do hope it reappears on the shelves soon!
-
It is in every Smiths I go in in Redditch and Birmingham and was in Leeds and Huddersfield when I lived up there. They will always get it in for you. I have subscribed for several years and £40 for the year isn't a huge sum to pay out, the equivalent of a kit perhaps. However, if it goes to more 1/50th diecast stuff, I can see me stopping buying as I have no interest in that side of it.
-
I also had a long conversation with the new chaps at the show last Sunday. They told me that they were in it for the long haul and were quite adamant that the plan was for the magazine to continue, and they could see the potential or they wouldn't have taken it on. I asked about the readers contributions and it was made quite clear to me that this was an essential part of the partnership and that those contributions were paramount because its a magazine for modellers by modellers.
Now I have contributed to this magazine since issue 3 back in April 1992, and I still intend to contribute for the future. If you don't want to lose it, you have to make the effort and support it like me and many others do, submit the articles, you don't have to be clever with words, because the editor will sort that, so long as there is the relevant information there. Make no mistake, Peter is irreplaceable, absolutely no question, and his legacy is this magazine and it would be a crying shame if the magazine were to fail through apathy and a cant be arsed any more attitude. Sure no body likes change but as they say, you've got to be in it to win it, and if other scales are included, that cant be a bad thing because that will surely increase the circulation and ensure the magazines survival.
These are just my thoughts, and I am sure there are people who will disagree, but come on, if we don't want to lose it, lets put the effort in and ensure it survives. Peter sweated blood keeping this magazine going, its up to us now.
-
:iagree: :iagree: :iagree: :bravo:
Well said Mick.
-
Well said Mick Waite! I have every copy of the mag since issue 1 and I hope to see it long continue. My model output is very low, and I had considered myself below par when comparing my to others. However, after being persuaded to attend Gaydon a couple of years ago, and again this year, I have come to realise that I can and do produce models worthy of print (Scania T-cab). This has been acheived by reading all the articles, irrelevant of scale, and using the tips and advice to improve my own. I am now starting to take more regard as to photographing current builds to show the work in progress, and will be submitting a report on the Iveco very shortly.

Of course it is a great loss that Peter stepped down as editor.
I think it's also up to us, modellers and contributors to make sure that the magazine can continue to exist. Me, as a regular contributor will continue to send in articles. But a model of a high level takes months to build. So one can only deliver one or two articles a year. It's therefore very important that new contributors are found. So look arround in your club or friends for people who make nice models but don't write about them. Maybe you can convince them to start writing. If the language is a problem, there are always collegue modellers who want to help. And ofcourse, it's all about readers. Making a magazine for only 600 readers will be difficult to continue, so lets convince friends to start buying the magazine.

Theres a way to keep updated on the latest trends, news, views, and updates on the truck model scene, its literally updated by the second, easily and readily available , and the best part?
Its free
The magazine s fall in sales has been inevitable, and will continue, as the power of the internet as consumed us all
I hate to be the fly in the ointment here, but the truth is, why pay for a magazine to see pictures of models that you can see on the forums, this forum and the woefully lacking tmw forum, wich lets face it has been very slow to update and improve, we can see the models for free and have a live interaction with the builder
You cant get that from print, print is dead
How long the forum continues ( tmw forum) could depend on how much effort the new publishers invest in it, and how much effort they put into it, they will be looking for commercial gains, not good will
If the magazine sales continue to fall, will they be prepared to continue to invest?
Some my consider it to be nothing short of sacrilege to talk this way, but this hobby is moving forward and so should we.
-
i agree with you Gordon and also think media print is becoming a thing of the past. i know when you get a few minutes spare to yourself there is no better feeling than to hold something between your hands while reading :embarrassed:  but lets face it who doesn't have laptop or iphone these days.
-
Some people (myself included) still prefer a printed version. I will read a printed magazine from cover to cover but if I download one, I tend to skip over stuff, particularly adverts. Even though you can zoom in on detail etc., there is just something about having a magazine drop through the door which is quite exciting. Forums are great but build threads can take a while to do as people obviously do them at their build rate (if they bother at all!) and we all know TMW don't allow - yet - any pictures of full size trucks or talk other than of model trucks.
I think the earlier days of the magazine were better when you got plans, drawings and good descriptions of HOW people made the models. Unfortunately now we mainly get a series of pretty pictures of the finished model which is nice to see but as Gordon said, they can be seen on forums or Facebook. It surprises me that now we have digital cameras and phones that modellers' don't record their progress more.
I will read about any scale of modelling - if done well - but I suspect the "more 1/50th" means diecast collectors and that really does bore me. If it got to be a higher percentage of features on taking a diecast out of the box and saying how good (or not) it is, that would stop me buying the magazine.
-
I am with Gordon. Yes print is dead. I only read certain article's that interest me. I am always looking at forums on tinternet. I can comment or chat to the builder and learn at the same time. Me personally would love to see a book all about our hobby wrote and designed by the guys i look up to. That i think would help others and maybe get new blood into our hobby
-
Since starting modelmaking 2 years ago, i've been a keen buyer of the magazine and always loved how Peter could set up a magazine that did exibit such a broad hobby, with the incluseion of multiple useful features such as kit reviews etc
However, for the 1 article i have contributed earlier in the year, i am yet to receive payment for. this is the primary reason i haven't started writing a new article for some of the models of latter i have made, once I receive my owed money i will further expand into writing articles to accompany my models

rhys traplet were a nightmare to deal with unanswered e-mails I got my money in the end but I know of others still owed money that side of things had nothing to do with peter it was purely traplet. I hope that it dosent put you contributing though this is a new company and they should be given a chance they seem keen enough to repair the damage that occurred under traplet drop the new company an e-mail about putting an article in as they say the more the merrier :-)

I'm sorry if this offends, but I think this a poor and selfish view to take. My model building has been greatly improved through reading articles in the mag, and along with these forums. I wasn't even aware you got paid for contributing an article. Nothing was mentioned or offered when my Scania was featured, and I never thought to ask. I was always under the impression that the magazine was 'by modellers for modellers'. Once I have finished building a model that I am pleased with, I will share the build process via the magazine and forums for free, and if this helps someone else in return, then even better!
-
Fair enough Darren, but at the end of the day he is owed money. Owed money is owed money, regardless of the source, whether it be the magazine or an employer. I'm currently owed money from a temporary job last month and from the taxman, neither are pleasing me very much either!
Rhys, don't let it put you off, my advice would be if you want to keep contributing articles, write them now while the build is fresh in your mind, and submit them once you've got the payment for the last one sorted.

I couldn't agree more mate, I didn't even know they offered payment for articles. Hell, most of us write that much & post so many photos on these forums anyway, what's the difference between putting those words onto a MS word document and emailing it along with some photos to an editor.
My trucks, have never been in TMW, but I've had many discussions with Peter (who do you think it was that leaked the information about the upcoming Drake K200 & 4x8 trailer), however my models have featured in the old Truckin' Life here in Australia (a magazine for 1:1 trucks that used to have a model truck section in it), and are soon to feature in an issue of Custom Trucks, also a magazine for 1:1 trucks.
I've never thought to ask for money for them, for me, when I open a magazine or something similar, and see photos of something I've done or an article I've written, it put's a massive smile on my face and fills me with pride... that's payment enough.
-
I agree it is great to see your model on print (especially getting the cover shot!) but TMW is a commercial enterprise and is selling magazines (hopefully to make a profit) using those articles therefore it is only right they should pay for them. However, they never advertisd that they paid for articles and indeed it was a bit hit and miss as to what they would pay for. If Peter was deemed to have written a large proportion of an article, they didn't pay, neither did they pay for "model in focus" pages. For general articles, I was paid £20 per page - not a huge sum but enough to buy more models!
I think this is another area IGP should clear up once the forum comes back online so at least we are all on "the same page". As for money owed Rhys, it is Traplet who owes you so please give IGP a chance before refusing to send in articles?
-
I've had quite a few articles printed and (luckily) had a couple of cover shots too, but I've only ever been paid for the first couple.
The last half dozen or so I haven't had a penny.
I'm not particularly bothered about getting paid for them (although it would be very nice!!), I'm just happy to see the fruits of my labour in print.
I shall still be writing articles and sending them in to the new editor in the hope that they will be used.
-
I could never understand the payment policy regarding submitted articles. I had three models published and was paid for only one of them. Not that it mattered, it was being in print that gave the buzz. :cheesy:
-
Reading between the lines here, I'm getting the impression that Traplet at some point decided to stop paying for articles ... and nobody appears to have been informed of the decision.
-
I can see what your views are o my post, BUT i was ASKED to write in as a junior modeller, and i was told i would be paid for it, if like many of you didn't know you got paid, i'd still be none the less.
I have spoken to IGP and although it was nothing to do with them, Andy has kindly sorted me out this afternoon. As Andrew has advised, I've started writing my latest article (the 3 Volvo's) and intend on submitting it at a later date, once i finish for Christmas.
-

I got paid for an article in one of the last issues by traplet but it did take longer than normal and their unwillingness to communicate wasn't very helpful.

Thats a shame what i read here, i did not know Peter stopped as editor.
I just recently sent him the story about my Iveco and heard nothing of him.
Also the forum is dead too i think, because it's seem to be out of service.
Thats a shame because i allways looks here and on TMW first as i open my pc.
I hope i still recieve issue 217 where my mack is in, as Peter promised me.
Internet has its benefits but also many negative...
-
Christiaan your Iveco article has been forwarded to the publisher so I expect it will be published in due course. The same goes for anyone else who submitted material to me.
All the articles which I had lined up for publication were handed over, along with those which were waiting to be edited. Its now up to the new editor and publisher to make use of them.
Peter.
-
enough of the mag what does your future hold Peter ? do you have plans or are just kicking back and relaxing ???
-
Thanks a lot Peter, wish you the best for the future.
I am starting to get nervos about issue 217 haha ;)
-
Hi, I'm gutted that TMW seems to be struggling and more so that Peter is stepping down. I'm obviously glad to see Peter retire he has worked so hard and deserves his rewards. I just wish I had managed to finish my build quicker as Peter gave me the chance to drop him a few lines about it which I was over the moon about.
As has been said, to be offered the chance to appear in print in TMW was to me unbelievable!
I have always preferred the printed word, I have hundreds of truck magazines from the 80's, car magazines from the late 80's to the present day too, you can't beat a hard copy for me, passing a tablet around with a picture of your build on it to show people isn't the same as it being on sale in the shops, possibly even on full view on the shelves! That is payment enough for me.
Thank you for everything Peter, I hope you enjoy your retirement, you deserve it.
Thank you, stew.

It's back!

It's back!
it must be down again willie I just tried and got the same message it does seem to be taking a very long time to sort things out. also IGP were supposed to be at a show yesterday and they did'nt turn up.

The "old " TMW forum is back online but the new one says it will be up in 7 days. To be honest though, as most people are on here too, do we really need the TMW forum as well? Disappointing if they did a no-show Alan.

it was a mostly tractor show yesterday but I got the impression the tractor boys were not very amused by the no show as they have their own magazine with igp as well there could well be a very reasonable explanation for them not being there but a phone call wouldn't have gone a miss. regarding the tmw site I like having both you should try the r/c side of things theres loads of forum but that mainy due to all the bickering that goes on in the r/c world so you have lots of small forums that's not very well used I think having just the 2 forums for us truck modellers is about the right mix.

Everyone keeps using the word "retire" but if you look at all my posts, I haven't mentioned the R word at all! Step aside isn't the same as retire. There's a bit of life in me yet!
I've got some ideas but don't want to say too much just yet.

Its only the pen that as gone down, and the schedule mate,i know that. just be you,and put knife and glue to plastic

so Andy what does the future hold for TMW and who will be the new editor ?
-
The tmw site, operates very similar to this forum, strange
-
so long as they don't start to pinch our ideas
-
Is it just me, or is anyone else having trouble logging in to the new site? ??? :bang head:  :taz:

Its you mate :cheesy:

Put in your username then click "forgotten password" and they will send you an email with a link to reset your password - I just reused the same one and back in we go.
I can't see IGP putting the time and money into having all the features that are on this site (maybe Andy will enlighten us?) although they now have a place for full size truck stuff.....
-
I'M IN!! :Banane21: :fireworks: :eatdrink: :weehee: Does feel vaguely familiar lol

We have long terms plans with Truck Model World. There is a global following of truck replicas and modelling so there is certainly continued scope for a magazine for the foreseeable future.
Our move to bi-monthly as of issue 217 has not been by choice, but necessity to keep the title going. There simply would be no more magazine if we carried on as is. There was a huge amount of cost involved in producing TMW as a monthly and unfortunately, revenue coming the other way has been minimal. Looking over the figures for the past few years, the magazine has simply not sold on the newstands. Something we are addressing in some detail as each of our TMW issues is published.
TMW's core will remain as a modelling magazine but we do want to broaden the scope of the title, opening it up to other elements of the truck replica hobby. New Diecast content, More Product Reviews of both kits and other models, Collector / Enthusiast features and interviews, Show Reports. These all have a place in the magazine. Rest assured, the core values of TMW will not simply be wiped clean but more so, it will be expanded upon, hopefully attracting new readers as a result.
As for the editor. It will be impossible to replace Peter but inevitably at some stage, we will look to bring someone new on board who has a passion for truck modelling. We are in no rush and hopefully by attending the big shows in 2015 and speaking to as many modellers as possible, we will be able to make a decision later next year.
And lastly, I notice some comments about the forum. We have relaunched the TMW forum using SMF. Reasoning for this? I used SMF for almost 8 years with the Farm Toys Forum. It's a simple easy to manage system that works well. We want the TMW forum to remain as a core supply base for articles. I have restructured it slightly for the better I hope!
As for Pinching ideas? I think a point that does need to be made quite loudly is that whether you're on TMW or this forum, or any other for that matter, we are one community of like-minded enthusiasts. We should work together to support every element involved that we can. We have already agreed to promote this forum in TMW and vice versa. The hobby needs forums and the magazine certainly does. It's what powers the supply chain of many articles. Which is why I will be encouraging you all to endeavour to get yourself in TMW. We are happy to feature modellers of ALL abilities. If your just to starting out on your first build, or completing your 1000th. There is a place for you in TMW. From my own experience of editing Model Farmer Magazine, enthusiasts love nothing more than seeing themselves in glossy hard copy print. Whether the content first appeared on a forum is irrelevant because reading your work in hard copy print in your hands provides a feeling a forum cannot. We are in a digital revolution but in my opinion nothing beats a good magazine.
Another point I have noticed too is the issue of cross posting. Does it really matter if a topic is duplicated on two or more forums and you've already read it once on one? We have the same thing in the farm modelling world but there's always someone who has not seen the content no matter what forum content is posted on.
I'll be happy to answer any further questions on here about TMW but to end my essay! I do look forward to TMW's affiliation with this forum and working together with it to benefit both concerns going forwards!
-
thank you for the reply Andrew.
as truck modellers we all hope TMW works out because the hobby needs as much promotion as it can get. if that means the mag has to go bi-monthly to ensure its survival then so be it. in my view and in the case of others the reason the mag has not sold on the news stands is simply because it has not been available, WH Smiths is the only place it seems to be available and even then it is very hit and miss. opening the magazine up to more genres might not be everyones cup of tea but more reviews on kits, weathering techniques and so on has got to be a good thing for the hobby.
SMF is far better than the software previously used by TMW and will alleviate a lot of the issues members had with the old forum  its also good to see IGP has the hobby at heart. as we seen with Traplet we both worked together in promoting the hobby and each other so i am sure this can continue with yourself Andrew. TMW or 24SMTF are hardly exclusives forums so cross posting is inevitable whether on these two forums or many others across the world. at the end of the day modellers are just letting the world see what they have produced.
-
WHS is a very much a double edge sword for small specialist publishers. We have to pay a listing fee to get the title in their stores, as you do with supermarkets. Unfortunately, once at the end of shelf life for an issue, the revenue is predominantly eaten up by costs for getting the magazine in there in the first place. Such a concept is irrelevant if thousands of copies are sold, but for very niche titles where only a few 100 are sold, it becomes a big problem. Unfortunately, it's the same rule regardless of whether your selling 15,000 Classic Truck Magazines or 300 Truck Model World copies. Unfair but another problem nonetheless. It's why WHS availability is limited.
IGP's focus is in identifying trends with similar magazines and targeting areas where, for example, real truck magazines, sell well. Local newsagents (non WHS), such as Londis, Costcutter, Martins etc are where all of our titles sell best in addition, if your local one does not stock a title you want, they are obliged to stock it if requested. We always encourage readers to request stocking one of our titles if they can't get it.
-
I'm guessing my local newsagent will still be able to get my copy as they do now? I don't really want to go down the subscription route as I like to support local companies when possible and I'm happy to pay a little more to do so  Looking forward to what the new style/content will be like, some times evolution is good :)
-
I think the main thing is that we have a company keen to take the magazine forward and hopefully the magazine will survive. its also good that they will be attending a lot a shows next year. as for the new tmw forum I think it works very well as i use a similar style forum on some of the rc truck sites i visit. i think that most people on this forum use tmw as well so quite a lot of topics will appear on both forums.

I think most of us are happy that TMW will continue and has found an owner who has a personal interest in the hobby. I do understand the need to diversify somewhat, truck Modelling has always been a niché market and 'we' often don't do ourselves favours by complaining about models/magazines/forums etc. personally I hate "collectable" diecasts, they bore me rigid but needs must if it keeps the magazine going. One thing I have mentioned before is the cover design. I do believe that casual buyers may think it is a truck magazine, rather than a model magazine due to the font sizes used.
I think there is only this and the TMW forum based in the UK (unless others know different?) so it is pretty inevitable there will be cross posting. Many also post on Facebook but FB is very fleeting - things can disappear quickly and threads on forums can also move down the pages quite quickly which is why I like having a magazine where I can savour an article. I do hope those who are considering submitting articles try to think ahead and take build photos as they go along. Some of the best articles in the past IMHO were the ones written specifically for publication by Howard and the like. Remember a picture is worth a thousand words!
There has been mention on this thread about payment for articles. This seemed to be a bit hit and miss with Traplet, almost as if you had to ask for payment before you got it. This may be more of a perception than reality. Andy, would you clarify if payments would be made for articles and if so, under what circumstances? For instance, I understand Traplet did not pay for "model in focus" pages or those where Peter had to substantially re-write.
-
There will be an announcement on article submission and payments early next week over on the TMW forum but of course I will post a notification here too. We are applying a few changes from the old system which seemed a bit confusing if you ask me.
If anyone is yet to receive payment for issues we have covered, please drop us an email or send me a PM, particularly international contributors.

Hang on a minute, whats this all about:

'Junior member'? Elevate this man to whatever is beyond 'hero'...... :cheesy: hehehehe
A few thoughts from me:
1. I do think magazines have a limited shelf life (pardon the pun), unfortunately its in the same area as Kindles killing off books, probably time yet, but at some point.........
2. Love TMW mag, great articles and not all builds on the forum, I can't recall seeing that Fab Scammell Blue Circle tanker anywhere?
3. Glad to hear its still going to be available, and that it might be easier to buy also
4. I was chuffed to have my first article published, after all, when I was a lad it was seeing Peter's articles and contributions from people like Jack Spittle (I think that was his name) and Eddie Waugh that really inspired me to having a go. However as Andrew (Voyager) rightly says, if a commercial organisation is making money, then it needs to pay its contributors, sorry, its the contract manager in me coming out......The money I earned from my articles basically funds my hobby, I'm a dad with three kids and a wife that has more shoes than Imelda Marcos, so I need any funds I can get
Peter, glad you have not retired, just 're-purposed', keep on modeling mate

2 Andy IGP.
Hello Andy.
May I ask you about current situation with advertising of aftermarket suppliers?
Thanks in advance.

I've always been paid for my articles, including one by IGP so no worries from my point of view I will continue to offer them as and when.
As for the WH Smith thing, I happen to know the publishers of another fairly niche market mag who have pulled it from WH Smith after being asked to pay for them to stock it!!!
Might I suggest to IGP that they offer it to as many truckstops with shops as they can think of. Certainly in TMWs early days I used to get it at BP truckstops who stocked it. Usually Penrith or Birtley.
