Title: Gaydon
Post by: voyager on April 08, 2010, 08:49:37 PM
Ok so most of us know about Gatdon but for those who don't, I visited for the first time last year and it was amazing! Hundreds of old commercials and a huge model truck show in one. I liked it so much I'm exhibiting this year.

I think last year was the first when Saturday was open to the public and although the turnout was good, some exhibitors (both full size and model) such as Chris can only make the Sunday. If you visit Saturday, you may miss a few people but then again I think there were less visitors so smaller crowds :D

I'd love to get there one year, but it seems to me to clash with Le Mans 24hrs every year? I'm off to France again, only my 20th yr on the bounce  :o 8) :P :D

Isn't it Fathers day on the Sunday?

I guess so, but here in Belgium we also have elections that day and in contrary to other countries that's obligatory for us.
So I have to proof where I was that day  :o

could you not vote by post ? or stick a moustache on the wife and send her in your place  ;D
Title: Re: Gaydon
Post by: KW on May 11, 2010, 05:51:31 PM
I know it may look strange for you, I think there are very few countries where elections are obligatory.
Let me explain a bit off topic here: "they" send us an "invitation" to go and vote, we have to go to the voting station that is on that paper (not to anyone!), that is mostly in a school in the neighbourhood.
You can give a procuration to somebody to vote in your place, BUT........... I have no wife, my parents live 35-40 kms from my house (and they cannot do my voting in their place) and I don't want to bother the neighbours with it.
As coincidence happens, most or our elections have always been on the Gaydon date (or before when it was in Rugby).
In the early years (I go to Gaydon since over 20 years) I had to go on Sunday morning to a local police station where they had to write me a paper declaring that I was there on thàt Sunday morning. Well, I can tell you: explaining what I needed was not the easiest part in a country where voting is voluntary!!
Later the rules became less strict and my crossing ticket (ferry or tunnel) was ok as proof I was away.
If you don't vote and you cannot prove you were away (or in hospital or something), it can cost you at least 50 euro, money which I can spend better in a modelshop  ;D ;D

Frantically trying to sort my display out but we had a new bathroom fitted mon/tues and I'm doing the tiling  :( plus my dad was taken to hospital last night - he has cancer - so not good timing. Nick, I'll take the rear off the Unimog with me, save the postage :D

Just to give you a flavour of the real trucks last year for those who have never been

Hi guys, thanks for the words, unfortunately Dad died last night. Although he had cancer and we knew it was terminal, it was a shock as the hospital were pleased with his progress and no-one was with him because we were expecting to visit him again today. Anyway, he taught me everything I know about DIY so if I don't do a good job, I'm sure he will find a way of telling me!

I guessed the Astran truck was a repaint but wasn't sure, apparently a regular so probably there again this year. Despite all, I am making progress on my display. I am not a fan of a table with a creased cloth (if you are lucky!) with a few trucks scattered about so I'm hoping to do something a bit more with htis, my first time displaying. I do know some exhibitors make much more effort then my glib statement suggests (including members of this forum such as Nick and Chris Eve) and my apologies to those who do try, just an overall view of the model shows I have attended, not making the most of the modelling skills shown.

As a previous winner of a best display trophy, I'm sure you can teach me a thing or two (blue please :D). I'm just generalising about my limited experience but I see shows as a great way of getting new blood into the hobby so I think exhibitors should make an effort to show their models in the best way. Only my opinion :-X

Voyager, first of all my condolences with the loss of your father.

About the table cloth, well I think I'll have to do with less this year  :(
Last year this happened (copied from TMW forum):
Hello everybody who were at Gaydon, I have a big question.
And I postponed asking several times because it makes me feel so stupid.
When going to shows I always carry a wooden container with sliding cover. Inside are my table covering materials, i.e. a beachtowel in US flag colors, a flemish flag (yellow with black lion), a flag with a Kenworth W900 and another flag with two long legs and the front of a conventional US truck behind.
In this container there are also some papers from previous model shows (Hannover Germany), a soft brush to take away dust from the models and a small tin with a couple of very little screwdrivers and a plastic photofilmroll container with some tiny screws (to assemble my US lowloader, but this was not in Gaydon this year).
I came home and after a couple of days I started unpacking my models and put them back in the glass cabinet where they are always. But I felt I was missing something.
I didn't know what, but the feeling stayed.
I looked and looked, all the models were there. But something was still missing and I still didn't know what. My head was paining of thinking.............
Then I saw that this wooden container was missing. I searched the car and the whole house: the hobby room, the spare room, the loft, the garagebox (which is one street from my house), but I couldn't find it.
I thought of 2 possibilities:
- or I left it in Gaydon
- or somebody was "helpful" to carry it (to his own car)
I never unpack this container at home, I always leave things inside for the next show, that's why it took a bit longer before it was really missed.
Anyway, the dimensions of the container are: L 68.5cm W 32cm H 13.5cm How I know so exactly? Because I had 3 of them (they were from an old office drawer at work) and only 2 are here now.
I sent an email to Ashley to ask this and he replied: "I do remember seeing the box left behind at the end of the show because it was put by the 'reception' desk, but then someone moved it, later so I guessed it was claimed. I do not remember who moved it. I do not know what happened to it after that. Maybe you can contact Gaydon and send them the e mail with details of the box. Perhaps they still have it in a store room?"

So that is what I did, I called/sent email to Heritage Motor Museum, but they didn't find anything.
I guess what happened: while I was arranging things in my car somebody thought the box was left and took it away to the reception desk. When I came back inside the hall to check my place if nothing was forgotten, I found it empty, said goodbye to some people and drove off.
Maybe somebody else has also seen the box and knows what happened with it, I would be very pleased to get it back (I know it was not great value, but it was very useful on shows and so).
I remember some people I saw there: of course Ashley, Peter White and Kim the photographer, also Paul Davis, all of the MMTC team: Dave Hewitt, Peter Reddish, Bob (tractor man) I had a nice weekend with them all, Jack (the Volvo man), Lonewolf from the forum, Ted Taylor, and some others that I forgot their names.........
On the other forum I had some sympathy but not really a good hint about it.
I really do hope that somebody can help me  :)

Gerdi,

I am going to Gaydon the first week in June to survey a bridge over the test track (and pick up my advance tickets... 8)).

If you think it would help, I will call in the heritage centre and ask at the reception for you??? Sometimes a person to person talk can be more responsive! If you have any pictures etc that might help send them through to me...(you have my e-mail).

If I can help you with this problem I will m8...

Hi Gerdi,

I had seen your post on TMW and am sorry to hear of the loss of your box. The cynical side of me would think someone thought there may have been something of value in the box and took it to find out. If that was the case, I would guess they disposed of it when they found it was more personal than valuable. I hope I'm wrong and that when you turn up it will be sitting waiting for you but I don't think life is like that. However if it is there, I suggest you buy a lottery ticket right away ;)

I knew when I said about displays (or lack of) I should have qualified it. I saw some great efforts which had some real thought put in but they were overshadowed by the majority which (in my humble opinion) did not. It just seems a shame to put the amount of effort that had clearly gone into some of the models, not to show them to their best advantage, remembering that many visitors will not actually be modellers and therefore should be given as much of an 'experience' as possible. See you all in a few weeks! :D

last year was my first visit and i ran around snapping away like a kid in a candy shop! As I'm exhibiting this year, I'll be spending most of my time with the table but when I do go to take pics, I'll be concentrating on those trucks I plan to make models of and making sure I get the info I think I'll need, hopefully talking to the owners to get interior shots etc. Last year I had 300 shots to go at, got a new memory card so 1300 pics to go at this time 8)

They will take an age to upload to photobucket but I tried to get lots of chassis shots of stuff that's available as kits so hopefully they should end up in the reference section sometime!

Rich, I can give you his email address, his mobile tel.number, etc... but he doesn't speak that much english, so I doubt you will get an answer (or he will forward it to me and I have to answer ..... ).
BTW have you seen the ASG Tekno's in the next hall in Gaydon, they were at £50 each or 3 for £100.
